Upgrading speed...

Hello, I'm upgrading to 1.8.7 right now - and I've got it down to a 16 step process, which includes backing everything up, stopping crons, uploading files, etc, etc.

Uploading the files in the "upgrade" folder takes FOREVER. Is there a better/faster way to do this? I'd love to use the "auto update" in the backend interface, but only if I can trigger it manually when I'm ready.

Surely there has got to be a more efficient way to overwrite all of these files than through FileZilla? There's like 24,000 files...

Let me know if there's a better way. Thank you!

@eggerda - beside the auto-update functionality, which has been developed exactly for this reason, your only option is to upload the update files as a zip and then extract them on the server and using command line copy them in the right location to overwrite existing files. That's a 5 minutes operation at most, but requires command line experience, which makes it more difficult.
