Unfortunately this workflow is not really possible given the way sending campaigns work.
However, we will get a fix for pcntl too.

Can you look into having the safety option to allow only X (e.g. one) concurrent connections per DS
(that is of course different from the max messages per connection aka "max connection msgs")?
This will prevent from overloading a single DS (or error messages, when it refuses), and it would then choose another DS.

Also found recently that some delivery servers refuse connections (111) on SSL/465 or TLS/25 (but not TLS587) only when using them parallel (so single, non-pcntl usage works fine, though it seems not a pcntl problem, but a protocol problem). This error occurance seems to have coincided with linux security updates around Fri, Aug 26. Do you have any idea how this can be fixed?
