Amazon SES "identity is invalid"

I followed Michael Wilding's excellent walk-through to setup Amazon SES as sending server. I cannot see any point I could have missed, yet both my verified domains are failing to send the test email for no obvious reason with the error complaining about email or domain validation.

Any idea what I've missed? I'm running out of options.

So, it looks like each individual email address from a verified domain has to be setup in Amazon SES in order to be validated as a FROM address.
Is that indeed the case? Anything that can be fixed on the MW side?
